Source: each plan's benefit schedule and premium table on vhis.gov.hk (vCANsurance F00051; vFamily F00072; vBooster F00069, same premium for men and women). Premiums are yearly, for a man, on each plan's lowest tier and lowest deductible option.
Who is vCANsurance better suited to?
Better suited to
- People who want full reimbursement: basic benefits are paid in full with no annual or lifetime limit, but each illness is capped at HK$650,000 per policy year.
- People often treated abroad: apart from psychiatric treatment and the Hong Kong intensive-care cash benefit, all benefits apply worldwide.
- Families insuring young children: the plan's general exclusions do not include unknown congenital conditions diagnosed before age 8 (pre-existing condition and other terms still apply).
May not suit
- People on a tighter budget: vFamily costs about 14% less for a 30-year-old man, with up to HK$550,000 per illness per policy year.
- People worried one illness could cost more than HK$650,000 who accept Asia-only cover: vBooster has an annual benefit limit of HK$8 million (see the table for per-illness limits), covers non-emergency treatment in Asia only, and offers deductible options.
What to know before buying vCANsurance
- Each illness has a total cap: Each illness is paid up to HK$650,000 per policy year.
- A higher ward class reduces the payout: If you choose a room above a standard general ward, only a percentage of that day's eligible expenses counts (50% for a semi-private room, 25% for a private room, 12.5% above that), though the payout is never less than the VHIS Standard Plan's benefit schedule would pay. This does not apply when it is not your choice, such as a room shortage or a medical need.
- Premiums rise with age: Yearly premium for a man: HK$5,745 at age 30, HK$6,822 at 40 and HK$18,293 at 60. The insurer may adjust standard premiums at renewal.
- The no-claim discount needs two claim-free years: Two policy years in a row with no claims cut the renewal premium by 15%; five years or more cut it by 20%.
- Disclose your health honestly: When you apply, answer the questions in the application honestly. A pre-existing condition you disclose may be given a specific exclusion.
This is general information only. It is not personal advice and is not an offer of insurance. Everyone's needs are different: before you buy, talk to your own licensed insurance intermediary or financial adviser. The insurer's policy terms set out the full cover and exclusions.
