Compare premiums using consistent age, sex, smoking status, ward class, geography, deductible and currency. This guide explains the method with traceable premium schedules. Use the quote launcher to compare your selected inputs.

Three different numbers

Measure What it answers What it does not establish
Standard annual premium Price for an age and option in a dated schedule Your final underwritten quote
Same-age repricing Change between schedules for an identical option Your entire renewal increase
Age-based premium curve Prices at different ages in one schedule Guaranteed future annual charges

Official VHIS FAQ Q24–26 explains published schedules, age and sex differences and renewal adjustments. Confirm your actual price and terms with the insurer. Official FAQs

One family, different deductibles: a sourced example

These are AXA WiseGuard Pro Regular tier standard annual premiums at attained age 30, in HKD, effective 2026-09-09. Regular is the product's tier name; it does not mean the VHIS Standard Plan category. Figures exclude levy, personal loadings and discounts.

Annual deductible Standard annual premium Annual saving against zero deductible
HK$0 HK$10,246 —
HK$20,000 HK$5,541 HK$4,705
HK$50,000 HK$3,573 HK$6,673

Savings alone cannot identify the right option. Medical bills, remaining deductible and other terms affect your eventual spending. This family's prices are not a market-wide price range.

Official schedules: zero deductible, HK$20,000, HK$50,000.

Repricing versus getting older

At age 30, the same zero-deductible HKD variant rises from HK$9,357 in the previous schedule to HK$10,246:

Same-age change = 10,246 ÷ 9,357 − 1 ≈ 9.50%.

Comparing age 30 this year with age 31 next year mixes ageing with schedule changes. The AXA update analysis lists all 24 certified variants and both official periods.

Annual premium divided by 12 is not necessarily a monthly quote

Dividing an annual premium by 12 helps monthly budgeting. Actual monthly payment depends on the insurer's payment-mode factors. The AXA schedules above specify these in their notes; do not present a budgeting average as an insurer's monthly quote.

A practical comparison process

  1. Match personal inputs and cover options in Compare Plans.
  2. Read item limits, deductibles, coinsurance and exclusions, not just annual cover.
  3. Use one case in the claim estimator to compare out-of-pocket amounts.
  4. Review premium history and methodology; past increases are not forecasts.
  5. If you have employer cover, read employer cover and deductibles and test affordability without it.

Frequently asked questions

Q1: Does a lower premium necessarily mean worse cover?

Price alone cannot establish that. Match inputs and read the benefit schedules and terms. Different deductible or currency options are not interchangeable.

Q2: Does a 9.5% reprice mean my renewal will rise by 9.5%?

Not necessarily. This is same-age standard repricing for specified variants. Personal renewal prices may also reflect age, loadings and discounts.

Q3: Should I switch for a lower price?

Price is only one consideration. Confirm new underwriting, exclusions, waiting arrangements and effective dates. Existing cover does not automatically carry over.
